Historical-Artistic Description

The bust portrays Emperor Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus with the typical features of his official iconography. Unlike the idealized portraits of his predecessor Caligula, Claudius often chose a style closer to republican realism , which conveyed wisdom, experience, and seriousness.

The plaster reproduction highlights the distinctive details of the face:

  • The broad forehead furrowed by expression lines, a symbol of gravitas and intellectual commitment.

  • The fixed and austere gaze, underlined by the deep eye sockets.

  • The "fringe" hairstyle, with neat locks framing the face, typical of the Julio-Claudian dynasty.

  • The drapery of the toga, which suggests the role of Princeps and protector of the State.
